FROM COLOMBIA TO THE WORLD
FROM COLOMBIA TO THE WORLD
Founded in Ontario, Canada, in April 2017, ET&MT Colombian Art has since become a fixture at cultural festivals, markets, and events across the country. One of our proudest moments was showcasing Kuna art during the Ottawa Welcomes the World Celebration for Colombia Day at Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017.
Molas are handcrafted using a reverse appliqué technique, where layers of colourful cloth (usually cotton) are expertly sewn together. The design is revealed by cutting away parts of each layer, with the edges meticulously turned under and sewn down. Master Kuna artists use nearly invisible stitches to create intricate designs, often using tiny needles and perfectly matched threads.
The craftsmanship behind Molas varies, and so does the pricing. The number of layers and the fineness of the stitching are key indicators of quality. Some Molas have up to seven layers and take anywhere from two weeks to six months to complete, depending on the complexity of the design.
Molas with signs of wear, such as stitch marks around the edges, are often more valuable, as they were originally created for use within the community—not just for sale. These details add to the authenticity and uniqueness of each piece.
We invite you to explore the rich cultural heritage and exceptional artistry of the Kuna people through our carefully curated collection.
At ET&MT Colombian Art, we proudly bring the vibrant artistry of the Colombian Kuna community to Canada. Our collection features beautifully handcrafted pieces, blending traditional Colombian leather with intricate, multi-coloured fabric applications. Each item is a one-of-a-kind artisanal masterpiece, meticulously cut and sewn by native Kuna women. The bright colours, patterns and designs, reflect the stunning wildlife and nature of their homeland.
