LEATHER & MOLA DESIGNS

ET&MT COLOMBIAN ART offers an extensive collection of unique art products.

Beautiful combination of Colombian cow leather and multi-colour fabric applications cut and sewn by hand by Kuna women. Each product is a unique art masterpiece representing the wildlife and nature of the region where the tribe lives.

ET&MT COLOMBIAN ART was created in January 2016 in Toronto, Canada. We import and distribute ARTEKUNA COLOMBIA’s products to Canada.

ARTEKUNA COLOMBIA is a small business created 12 years ago in Bogota Colombia by a couple of young entrepreneurs, Jeimmy Caro and Alexander Pinilla. They joined their commercial and leatherworker skills to create products using leather and Molas. They not only developed an innovative product, but also made a social commitment supporting the Kuna’s community located in Colombia and Panama.

Mola History

In Dulegaya, the Kuna’s native language, “mola” means “shirt” or “clothing”. The mola originated with the tradition of Kuna women painting their bodies with geometrical designs, using available natural colours; in later years these same designs were woven in cotton, and later still, sewn using cloth bought from the European settlers of Panamá.

Molas have their origin in the body painting. Only after the colonization by the Spanish and contact with missionaries the Kuna started to transfer their traditional geometric designs on fabric, first by painting directly on the fabric and later by using the technique of reverse application. It is not known for certain when this technique was first used. It is assumed that the oldest molas are between 150 and 170 years old.
